Choosing a stump grinding service

A stump grinder chews the stump into mulch, typically to somewhere between 100 and 300 millimetres below ground level, deep enough for lawn or garden beds. If you plan to build, pave or replant a tree in the same spot, tell the operator, because they can grind deeper and remove more of the root plate.

Quotes usually depend on the stump diameter, the timber species, access for the machine and how many stumps you have. Narrow side gates matter: most operators run a compact machine that fits standard gates, but very large stumps in tight backyards can need a bigger machine or more time. Asking for a photo quote with a tape measure across the stump is common and speeds things up.

Grinding leaves a mound of wood-chip mulch mixed with soil. Some services include removing it and backfilling with soil in the quote, others leave the mulch for you to reuse. Confirm which you are getting in writing, along with whether surface roots beyond the stump are included.

Frequently Asked Questions About Stump Grinding

Standard grinds go a few hundred millimetres below ground level, which suits lawn and garden beds. If you are paving, building or replanting in the same spot, ask for a deeper grind and removal of the major roots. Confirm the depth in the written quote.

Often it is quoted as a separate line item, and some tree crews do not grind stumps at all. If you want the stump gone, say so when you get the removal quote and check it is listed in writing. Combining both jobs with one operator is usually cheaper than bringing a grinder back later.

Grinding removes the stump and the top of the root plate, and the remaining roots slowly decay in the ground over several years. For most yards that is fine. A small number of species can send up sucker regrowth from live roots, which your operator can treat or advise on.

Most operators run compact machines designed to fit through a standard side gate. Measure your narrowest access point and mention it when you ask for a quote, along with any steps, slopes or soft ground the machine has to cross.
